As the days get lighter, many of us naturally spend more time outside going for walks, gardening or simply enjoying a coffee in the fresh air. Being outdoors has great benefits for mental and physical health but it can take a toll on your skin.
Exposure to sun, wind, pollution and pollen can cause dryness, irritation, premature ageing and breakouts so how do you keep your skin healthy and glowing while making the most of the fresh air? Here is what you need to know about protecting your skin outdoors and avoiding common seasonal skin struggles.
How Being Outdoors Can Affect Your Skin
Your skin is your body’s first line of defence and different environmental factors can weaken or stress it out:
Sun Exposure – Even if it is not hot UV rays can still cause sun damage, pigmentation and premature ageing.
Fluctuating Temperatures – Going between cool mornings, warmer afternoons and breezy evenings can cause skin dehydration.
Pollen and Allergies – If you suffer from hay fever pollen can trigger redness, puffiness and itchy skin.
More Exposure to Pollution and Wind – Outdoor activities expose skin to irritants that can clog pores and cause inflammation.
How To Protect Your Skin Outdoors
1. Choose the Right Moisturiser:
Spending more time outside can leave skin feeling dry or irritated so hydration is key. Use a lightweight but protective moisturiser that helps strengthen the skin barrier.
Look for:
Hyaluronic acid – Keeps skin hydrated.
Aloe vera – Soothes irritation from wind or pollen.
Niacinamide – Strengthens the skin’s barrier and protects against pollution.
2. SPF is Essential Every Single Day
One of the biggest skincare mistakes is thinking SPF is only for summer. UV rays are always present even on cloudy days and can cause lasting damage.
Use SPF 30+ daily even if you are not sunbathing. Choose a sunscreen with broad spectrum protection (UVA & UVB). If outside for long periods reapply every 2 hours especially if you are sweating or gardening.
3. Exfoliate with Care
Skin can become dull and rough from outdoor exposure but over exfoliating makes it more sensitive to the elements. Use a mild exfoliant 1 - 2 times a week (fruit enzymes or lactic acid are great options). Avoid harsh scrubs that can strip the skin. Always follow with SPF because freshly exfoliated skin is more vulnerable to damage.
4. Protect Against Pollen and Pollution
If you struggle with allergies your skin may become red, puffy or irritated from pollen exposure. To minimise reactions:
Double cleanse at night to remove allergens.
Use antioxidants like Vitamin C to defend against environmental damage.
Apply a hydrating mist throughout the day to soothe skin.
5. Stay Hydrated Inside and Out
Being outdoors especially in breezy or dry air can dehydrate your skin. Keep it plump and fresh by:
Drinking plenty of water and herbal teas.
Eating hydrating foods like cucumber, berries and leafy greens.
Using a hydrating serum or mist if you are outside a lot.
6. Extra Protection for Wind and Sun Exposure
If you spend a lot of time walking, gardening or relaxing outside remember to:
Wear sunglasses to protect the delicate eye area.
Use a lip balm with SPF because lips can burn easily!
A hat or scarf can provide extra protection against windburn and sun exposure.
7. Give Your Skin a Boost with Professional Care
If your skin is feeling dry, tired or in need of a reset a professional facial can deeply nourish and restore it. It’s a great way to:
Remove built up dullness from outdoor exposure.
Replenish lost moisture.
Strengthen your skin barrier for future protection.
