We get it! In the UK sunshine can be a rare treat and some people think “I don’t burn so I don’t need suncream.” Here is the truth bomb sun damage does not always show straight away, it is sneaky. Years of unprotected exposure can suddenly show up as pigmentation, wrinkles or worse skin cancer. SPF is not just for beach days it is your skin’s daily armour.

What Does SPF Actually Do?

SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor. It protects against UVB rays which cause burning. Look for broad spectrum protection (this also guards against UVA rays - the ones that cause premature ageing and go deeper into the skin). Think of UVA as A for Ageing and UVB as B for Burning.

Why It's Still Important on Cloudy Days?

UV rays can still reach your skin even through clouds, windows and glass. Even if you are spending the day indoors, driving or it is overcast, your skin is still exposed. Think every walk to the car, popping out with the dog, hanging the washing out, it is those tiny moments that add up over the years.

Signs of Sun Damage

You might not notice it now but your future skin will give you a nudge or a scream. Look out for -

  • Fine lines and wrinkles

  • Dry, leathery skin texture

  • Brown spots, pigmentation, freckles multiplying

  • Broken capillaries (especially around the nose and cheeks)

  • Uneven skin tone

  • Sagging or thinning skin

  • Redness and flare-ups (especially if prone to rosacea)

  • Worst of all increased risk of skin cancer

And these signs? They tend to appear later in life when the damage is already done. Prevention is way easier than reversal.

My Favourite Non Greasy, Lovely to Wear SPFs

Gone are the days of thick, chalky white creams that make you feel like a greasy chip. Here are some gorgeous, lightweight SPFs I would recommend (especially if you hate the feeling of sunscreen) -

Face

La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Invisible Fluid SPF50+ – Ultra-light, absorbs in seconds, fab for sensitive skin.

Eucerin Oil Control SPF50+ – Mattifying and great under makeup.

Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun SPF50+ –

Korean skincare gem. Lightweight, no white cast and super hydrating.

Heliocare 360 Gel Oil-Free SPF50 –

Anti ageing ingredients and feels amazing.

Body

Nivea Sun Protect & Moisture SPF50+ –

Affordable and hydrating.

Bondi Sands Hydra UV SPF50+ – Feels like a body moisturiser, non greasy and smells divine.

Garnier Ambre Solaire Sensitive Advanced – Great for the whole family especially sensitive skin types.

Altruist Dermatologist Sunscreen SPF50 – Created by a dermatologist, affordable and no sticky feel.

Don’t Forget These Commonly Missed Spots

These areas are often left out but catch the sun just as much:

  • Ears (especially the tops!)

  • Neck and chest (big ageing giveaways)

  • Back of hands (hello sunspots)

  • Tops of feet and ankles

  • Scalp and parting (spray or powder SPF is fab here)

  • Lips – use a lip balm with SPF!

SPF Tips for Everyday Life

  • Apply 20 minutes before heading outside

  • Use enough! You need about half a teaspoon for your face, and a shot glass worth for your body

  • Reapply every 2 hours if you are out and about

  • Wear it even if you are indoors especially near windows

  • Combine with hats, sunglasses and shade for ultimate protection

Final Thoughts

You do not need to be sunbathing to get sun damage. Daily exposure builds up over time even on cloudy days. Protecting your skin now is one of the biggest anti ageing steps you can take and your future self will thank you big time. Think of SPF as skincare AND self care. I always say something is better than nothing. A moisturiser with SPF is great for beginners then work your way up to dedicated face and body SPf's that suit your skin type.
