Ever stood in front of the mirror and thought, “What’s going on with my skin?”
Maybe it feels dry when it used to feel balanced or suddenly looks dull and tired. Perhaps there is some redness that won’t go away or breakouts popping up where they usually don’t.
These little changes can feel frustrating especially when your usual routine doesn’t seem to be cutting it anymore. But here is the thing your skin is clever, it is always trying to tell you what it needs, sometimes it just takes a bit of decoding.
Let’s break down a few common signs your skin might be showing you and what could be behind them:
1. Redness, Flushing or Sensitivity
Your skin might be saying: “My barrier needs a break.”
Over exfoliating, stress, weather changes or certain ingredients can disrupt your skin’s protective barrier.
What can help:
Swap harsh scrubs for gentle, non stripping cleansers.
Look for calming ingredients like oat, chamomile or ceramides.
Keep things simple and soothing for a while.
2. Dry, Tight or Flaky Patches
Your skin might be saying: “I’m thirsty!”
Dryness and dehydration are often confused but they are not the same. Even oily skin can lack water.
What can help:
Use hydrating serums with hyaluronic acid under your moisturiser.
Layer lightweight moisture rather than heavy creams.
Drink more water.
Mist throughout the day especially in hot or air conditioned spaces.
3. Breakouts or Bumpy Texture
Your skin might be saying: “I’m feeling overwhelmed.”
This could be from product build up, hormones or skin not being cleansed thoroughly enough.
What can help:
Keep your routine basic but effective, cleanse well and do not overload.
Use non comedogenic products.
Avoid too many actives at once (skin can only take so much!).
Change your pillowcase often and clean makeup brushes regularly.
4. Dullness or a Grey Tinge
Your skin might be saying: “I need a refresh!”
Lack of exfoliation, stress, sleep deprivation or low circulation can all rob your glow.
What can help:
Introduce gentle exfoliation 1 - 2 times a week (think enzymes or lactic acid).
Boost with brightening ingredients like vitamin C.
Facial massage can do wonders even just a minute or two a day.
5. Your Skin Just Feels Different
Your skin might be saying: “My needs are changing.”
Hormones, age, lifestyle and the seasons can all shift what your skin wants and what used to work might not anymore.
What can help:
Take stock of your current routine maybe it just needs a tweak.
Focus on nourishment not perfection.
Skin doesn’t need a 10 step routine just the right ingredients for you.
One last thing...
If your skin is behaving differently, it does not mean you are doing anything wrong. It just might need something different and that is perfectly normal.
Sometimes getting a professional facial or skin consultation can help identify what your skin is trying to say. Even small tweaks at home can make a big difference. Be kind to your skin, it is doing it's best just like you are.
