Gel Nails Explained: Which One is Right For You?

If you have ever looked at a nail salon treatment menu and felt confused by all the different gel options like gel polish, builder gel, BIAB, hard gel, well you are not alone! With so many choices it can be tricky to know which one is right for you.

I will break down the differences between these gel treatments in simple, easy to understand terms, so you can choose the best option for your nails.

What Are Gel Nails?

Gel nails are a long lasting alternative to regular nail polish. Unlike traditional polish that can chip within days, gel is cured (hardened) under a UV or LED lamp making it more durable and glossy. Take note that not all gel products are the same!

Let’s go through the different types and what they are best for.

1. Gel Polish

What is it?

Gel polish is like a tougher, longer lasting version of regular nail polish. It is applied in thin layers and cured under a UV or LED lamp, giving a high shine finish that lasts up to 2 - 3 weeks.

Who is it for?

  • If you nails are already strong and healthy

  • If you want long lasting colour without chipping

  • If you don’t need extra strength or protection

Things to consider:

It will not strengthen weak or brittle nails, it is just for colour and shine!

2. Builder Gel / BIAB (Builder in a Bottle)

What is it?

Builder gel (often called BIAB) is a thicker, more flexible gel that adds strength to natural nails. It is still lightweight but provides more protection than gel polish. It can be worn alone for a natural look or with gel polish on top.

Who is it for?

  • If your nails are weak, bendy or prone to peeling

  • If you want to grow your natural nails longer without extensions

  • If you love a natural, healthy looking manicure

Things to consider:

It is not as hard as acrylic or hard gel so if your nails break easily you may need something stronger.

3. Hard Gel

What is it?

Hard gel is the strongest type of gel product and is used for overlays over natural nails or for adding length and structure. It is much tougher than builder gel and is often used as an alternative to acrylic nails.

Who is it for?

  • If your nails break easily and need extra protection

  • If you want to add length to your natural nails

  • If you are tough on your nails, for example if you work with your hands a lot.

Things to consider:

It needs to be filed off rather than soaked off like gel polish.
