Winter Skincare Tips You Haven't Tried Before

Winter can be ruthless on your skin, leaving it dry, irritated, and lackluster. Most people know the basics to moisturize more, avoid hot showers, and drink water but what if you could take your winter skincare routine to the next level?

Here are some less obvious tips to keep your skin radiant and healthy, even in the harshest winter months.

1. Double Cleanse with an Oil-Based Cleanser

Winter skin needs gentle care and an oil based cleanser can make all the difference. Start your routine by removing makeup, sunscreen, and impurities with an oil-based cleanser. Not only does this step hydrate your skin, but it also preps your skin for the second cleanse, which can better remove grime without stripping essential oils.

2. Incorporate a Humidifier into Your Skincare Arsenal

You’ve heard of products like serums and masks, but what about a humidifier? Heating systems dry out the air, and your skin pays the price. A humidifier adds moisture back into your environment, helping your skin retain hydration naturally. Use it overnight for maximum benefits.

3. Switch to Overnight Cream Masks

Regular moisturisers might not cut it in the winter. Instead of your nightly moisturiser, try an overnight cream mask a few times a week. These products are deeply hydrating and create a protective barrier that locks in moisture while you sleep. Look for ingredients like ceramides and hyaluronic acid.

4. Don’t Skip Sunscreen

Even though it’s cold and cloudy, UV rays can still damage your skin. Snow reflects sunlight, increasing UV exposure, especially if you are outdoors. A broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher should be a non negotiable part of your daily routine.

5. Layer Your Products Like You Layer Clothes

In the winter your skin loses hydration faster so layering is crucial. Start with lightweight, hydrating products like a toner or essence, then add a serum, moisturiser and if necessary an occlusive product like petroleum jelly or balm to lock everything in. Think of this as the skincare equivalent of bundling up with a sweater, coat and scarf.

6. Exfoliate, but Gently

Exfoliation is still important in winter, but you need to do it wisely. Over-exfoliating can strip your skin of essential oils. Opt for a gentle chemical exfoliant, such as one with lactic acid, which also provides hydration while sloughing off dead skin. Limit exfoliation to 1–2 times per week.

7. Use Lukewarm Water with Your Products

Hot water might feel heavenly on cold mornings but it can strip your skin’s natural oils. Stick to lukewarm water when washing your face or showering. It’s a small change with big results for preventing dryness and irritation.

8. Apply Moisturiser to Damp Skin

This simple trick makes your moisturser far more effective. After cleansing or bathing, pat your skin dry but leave it slightly damp, then apply your moisturiser. Damp skin absorbs products better locking in hydration.

9. Upgrade Your Lip Care Routine

Dry, cracked lips are a common winter complaint. Instead of just slathering on lip balm, exfoliate your lips first with a gentle lip scrub or a mix of sugar and honey. Then apply a rich lip balm with ingredients like shea butter or lanolin. For extra protection seal it with a thin layer of petroleum jelly.

10. Take Advantage of Seasonal Foods

Your diet can impact your skin. Winter is a great time to enjoy antioxidant-rich foods like pomegranates, oranges, and sweet potatoes. These are packed with vitamins that support skin health and combat the dullness that winter can bring.

11. Customise Your Skincare for Indoor and Outdoor Needs

Your skin faces different challenges indoors and outdoors. When outside focus on protecting your skin from harsh winds and cold with heavier products. Indoors, combat dryness from heaters with hydrating mists and barrier creams.

12. Don’t Forget Your Hands and Feet

We often neglect our hands and feet in winter. Apply a thick hand cream throughout the day and wear gloves outside. At night slather your feet in a nourishing balm and wear socks to lock in moisture.

The Bottom Line

Winter skincare doesn’t have to be complicated but it does require some adjustments to address the season’s unique challenges. By incorporating these less conventional tips, you’ll have glowing skin all year around.
