Blue Monday: A Little Self Care Goes A Long Way

Feeling a bit Meh? Apparently today is Blue Monday, often called the most depressing day of the year. It is that awkward part of January where the Christmas sparkle has well and truly packed it's bags, the weather is still grey and soggy, the evenings are dark, the bank balance has taken a wobble and motivation is… well… hiding under a blanket with a cup of tea.


Clients come in feeling -


  • Tired and run down

  • Stressed and overwhelmed

  • Achy and tense

  • Low in confidence

  • Fed up with dry skin, brittle nails and dull hair


If you are feeling a bit flat today, please know you are completely normal.


Why January hits so hard especially for busy women


After the rush of Christmas, January can feel like a bit of a crash landing. For busy mums, working women and retired ladies alike, this is the month where -


  • Everyone is back to routines

  • School runs and work pressures restart

  • The house needs sorting after the festive chaos

  • The garden looks sad and muddy

  • And you have put yourself right back to the bottom of the list


Add in cold weather, less daylight and seasonal dry skin and it is no wonder we feel a bit ‘blah’.


Small self care really does make a big difference


Self care does not have to mean a spa weekend or a big expensive treat. Sometimes it is the little things that lift your mood the most -


  • Taking 5 minutes to massage hand cream into dry, cracked hands

  • Booking a manicure so your nails feel neat, tidy and looked after again

  • Lying down for a back, neck and shoulder massage to release tension

  • Giving your skin some love with a hydrating facial

  • Popping on a cosy jumper and actually resting for an evening without guilt


These tiny moments remind you that you matter too, not just everyone else.


How beauty treatments help your mood not just how you look


It is not about being ‘perfect’ or glamorous. It is about how you feel afterwards -


  • Shoulders drop

  • Breathing slows

  • Your mind goes quiet

  • You feel lighter

  • You walk out standing a little taller


Touch, relaxation and being looked after are powerful especially when life feels heavy. I see it every single week in the beauty room.


Winter beauty struggles I am seeing right now


January always brings the same problems -


  • Dry, tight skin from cold air and central heating

  • Weak, peeling nails from lots of washing, cleaning and gardening gloves being forgotten

  • Tension headaches from stress and poor sleep

  • Low confidence after weeks of living in joggers and hoodies


And none of these mean you are failing, they just mean it is winter and you are human.


My gentle Blue Monday reminder for you


You do not have to fix your whole life this week. Just do one small thing for yourself -


  • Drink more water

  • Go for a short walk in daylight

  • Moisturise your hands before bed

  • Book a treatment you have been putting off

  • Or simply rest without feeling guilty


That is more than enough.


A beauty salon is your little January escape. If you need somewhere warm, calm and welcoming to press pause for a while, a relaxing beauty room will give you just that.


A quiet space to:


  • Switch off

  • Breathe

  • Relax

  • Feel like you again
